After a conversation with my bueno friend and colleague Sam Richmond, who is also a stud Thrive manager at the City Fitness Fishtown location in Philadelphia, I came to a realization that hopefully you and allll yah friends who also coach can benefit from.
Let’s get into the nitty gritty...anyone else playing that Quiz HQ hogwash?! I have almost punched my own head multiple times after not knowing the answer to: “The phrase ‘cul-de-sac’ literally translates to what?” STFU if you actually knew that the answer was: “bottom of the bag.” Nerd.
Ok for real now. Legggggo.
One of the best things about our industry is that most coaches and trainers truly strive for those epic moments with clients. You know, those “Holy $hit, I actually lost the weight, or I actually look super f’n sexy, or I did my first chin up, or I went on that hike with my grandkids, etc.” Those are the moments that we, as coaches, live for. But, my question is this, and don’t take this the wrong way…
Did you, the coach, earn it?
I think that we can all agree (although it is really dang hard to do) that some clients would have achieved the same awesomeness that they did with you with anyone because they were just that motivated and ready to put in the work. So, before you jump through the screen and start tryna punch me remember that I said “some.”
So, chill, G.
Those moments that we all strive for are so much sweeter when we know that we did every-damn-thing that we could to drive that client into the sweet-spot of achievement.
We didn’t fake it or get lucky.
Some quick n’ dirty ways to do it right:
- Provide a workout that keeps the client safe because hurt clients don’t show up
- The workout should be designed for them not you
- Study. This is severely over-looked and something that the top coaches do
- Do you do everything in your power to get them to show up (texts, call, emails, social media tags, show up at their door…) or do you just assume that they will show up?
- Prepare (actually prepare) for the upcoming session
- Remember specific things about the client’s personal life
- Put thought into what exercises they will be doing that day and when they might need to rest or turn it up
- Do they have any movement restrictions that you might overlook and how do those come into play with the upcoming workout
- Did you give them homework that you need to check in on
- Be memorable
- Teach them something every single time
- Speak client
- Make them feel better about themselves
- Challenge them
- Celebrate the small things. Their goals aren’t your goals, so don’t just say “Great job” when they do something that you think is cool based off of your opinion of fitness success. i.e. Maybe a huge win for them was just to show up for 2-weeks consistently.
At the end of the day, it might be a really good idea to track our success percentage. In other words, what percentage of clients that start with you actually have that moment of success? This might be our most important stat outside of actually being able to gain clientele.
